What happen to Elijah McClain?
On Aug. 24, 2019 Elijah McClain was walking home from a convenience store when three police officers approached him. The officers were responding to a 911 call reporting a “suspicious looking man”. Elijah McClain was listening to music as he walked home and questioned why the officers were stopping him.
The officers claimed they had a right to stop him for “looking suspicious” and immediately started to restrain him. Elijah McClain asked the officers to not touch him and respect his boundaries while he was questioned. The officers resorted to physical restraint immediately and forced Elijah McClain to the ground.
The body cam footage of all officers involved was released three months after the incident. The officers involved claimed all three of their cameras had fallen off during. The footage shows how the officers forced Elijah McCain to the ground as he asked to be let go. At one point an officer threatened Elijah with a police attack dog if he didn’t comply. The officers restrained Elijah McCain with a carotid hold , which has since been banned by the department, resulting in him losing consciousness at least once.
When more officers and paramedics arrived on scene, Elijah McCain was given a larger than appropriate dose of Ketamine , an extremely strong sedative. Elijah McCain went into cardiac arrest on the way to the hospital where he later died.
All officers involved in this case were put on administrative leave and have since been reinstated.
